Reconstructive surgery for plastic surgery patients in general involves surgical procedures to restore function, form or appearance. This includes treatment of deformities or alterations in appearance from birth defects, trauma, burns, cancer, infection or prior surgery. These procedures place greater emphasis on restoration of protective skin, fat or muscle for closure of wounds over aesthetic appearance. Board certified plastic surgeons treat complex wounds, injuries and deformities on all parts of the body.

They often utilize movement of local or distant skin, fat, or muscle to assist with reconstruction. This may include the use of grafts, flaps, bone grafts, tissue expanders, lasers, or implants. This site is not intended to review reconstructive surgery but does provide a few examples of plastic surgery applications in reconstructive surgery of craniofacial, hand, truncal, and lower extremity injuries.
